How to Chart a Supernumerary
Charting a Supernumerary (SN) or Mesiodens requires that you do the following:
Create a Draw Type for a Condition called Supernumerary and/or Mesiodens.
Create a Condition called Supernumerary and/or Mesiodens.
Connect the Draw type to the Condition.
Let’s start with the Draw Type. Let’s create a simple Custom Draw type to represent where a SN might exist. My preference is to create a representation of a SN that is distal of the a tooth.
From the Eaglesoft Virtual Clinical screen:
Go to List>Draw Types
New
In Description use “Supernumerary”
Make sure the Affected area is Tooth
Uncheck the box for “Use for all teeth” check box.
Check the box for Flip teeth 9-24 and F-O
Check the box for Allow conditions
Click the Clear button
9. Using the circle tool set to size 2 bush size (with the slider), create two ovals as shown in the pic below. If your ovals get “cut off” by the left screen margin, use the undo button and try again
10. Click Save and Close
11. Click Edit to edit the Draw Type you just created.
12. Uncheck the Use for all teeth check box.
13. Pick the Eraser tooth (2nd from left Drawing Tool)
14. Change the slide bar to “10”
15. “Erase” the lower ovals on tooth numbers 1 to 8.
16. Erase the upper ovals on tooth numbers 25 to 32.
17. Erase the lower ovals on tooth numbers A to E.
18. Erase the upper ovals on tooth numbers P to T.
19. Click Save and Close
The Eaglesoft FAQ suggests was updated in October of 2024. Prior to that the FAQ advised user to enter a tooth number beyond #32. You cannot. Here is the link to the new FAQ: Supernumerary Teeth
You now have a Draw Type created for Supernumerary Teeth!
Next you need a Condition to chart a SN. From the Clinical screen:
Go to List>Conditions>New (if you do not already have SN as a Condition).
Create a Description and Display Abbreviation
Use the Draw Type drop down to pick the Supernumerary Draw Type that was created in the Previous steps.
Confirm that the Affected area is Tooth.
Click Save and Close
How to Chart the Extraction of a Supernumerary
The most common service performed on SNs is Extraction. We’ll need to create a Draw Type for the SN Extraction while we’re at this. You’ll follow the same instruction as creating the “Oval” for the SN but this time you’ll use an “X” and the Description will be “Extraction of Supernumerary”.
How to Walkout Supernumerary Services
Because the most common service performed on SNs is Extraction. To submit for the Extraction of a SN, you have to set-up a new Service Code.
Go List > Service Codes > New.
Create the Service Code S7140 (first line in creating a new code) and the ADA Code is S7140 (second line in creating a new code) Description is “Extraction - Erupted or Exposed – Supernumerary”. The Standard Fee is the same as the D7140 “Extraction - Erupted or Exposed” code (see pic).
Within the Service Code setup, you will need to click the Chart Setup Button. Then do the following:
For the Draw Type select “Extraction Supernumerary” that you created.
It is very important to NOT use an Action code like any other Extraction. We do not want the Supernumerary extraction to impact the adjoining tooth.
If needed, create the Service Code is S7111 (first line in creating a new code) and the ADA Code is D7111 (second line in creating a new code) Description is “Extraction - Coronal Remnants - Primary Supernumerary”. The Standard Fee is the same as the D7140 “Extraction - Coronal Remnants - Primary” code.
There is no way (currently) to draw a restoration on a SN.
Offices who have gone through our Clinical Skill Development get our Custom Draw Type Pack (see below) that include a more detailed drawing set, but the basics above will do the job.
If you are Vyne Dental user, they suggest walking out the Perm tooth number. Then in the "Remarks for Unusual Services" enter a note that "This is a Supernumerary Tooth #51+". I have not seen this in action and would love to know if it works. I have not found that RFUS helps a claim.
